An exciting expedition

I  have hated kitchen more than anything in this world. Despite of being a foodie, I never crossed the threshold and made an effort in doing something constructive in the there. Coming from a family where everyone cooks well and enthusiastically, my parents always ensured that I didn't have to spend time in the kitchen. Whenever Mum could not give time, Papu would handle it and after a certain time, if none of them could, my brother Yash, six years younger to me, fed me without any complaint. So life was pretty set. Whenever Mum Papu showed any concern regarding my culinary skills, I would dismiss the thoughts, saying I would hire a cook. Back in college, once I had a conversation with Yash which went like this: Yash: Jijji you don't know how to cook. How will you feed your kids ?? Me: We'll have a cook at my place. Not to worry. Yash: What if they want to eat food cooked by you ?? Me: Maggi always helps Yash: What if they want to eat the proper " Maa ke haath ka ...

The Plight of a Teacher's Ward

Today , while talking to mum, I got to know about one of my school mate's wedding, who also, happens to be our vice principal's son. As soon as I heard about him, I was transported back to my school days in Delhi. After recalling a few memories, I decided to write this piece. For the background, my mom has been a teacher in my Alma Mater and has also taught me for three full years. The five years that I spent along with her in the school during my teenage, are surely not the memories I would want to cherish. Not because I had any issues with her, but because others had issues with me. This is for every single soul on the earth who is prejudiced against a teacher's ward. Let me clear your misconceptions... Myt h : A teacher's ward is pampered by the rest of the teachers Fact : A teacher's ward is more prone to reprimands as compared to others because it would take at least a day to summon your parents. But our parents are available in the school for the impromp...

Don't shy from Periods. Period.

Disclaimer : This post is as readable for men as it is for women. Menstruation has always been a topic of taboo across the globe. A completely natural biological process, yet turns people redder than the blood flowing out of a woman's vagina every month. Here in India, we come across a lot many celebrations for the periods we can't even think of. Be it  Ritushuddhi in Tamil Nadu, Ambubachi Mela in Assam or Raja Sankranti in Odisha, people celebrate it with full fervor but won't acknowledge it openly. The moment a lady hears the P or M word, she'll Hush you and at the same time, men tend to ignore what they have heard. The entire Indian society deals with Periods in a very secretive manner. However, treating it just like anything else, say sleeping or pooping won't hurt much. We come across a lot many advertisements of sanitary napkins showing them absorbing some blue liquid. Where does this blue liquid come from ??? As far as I know, we have blood flowing out whic...

Sinistral : That is Meeee !!!!!!

While going through the comments on my previous blog, I came across one of my cousin's comment, stating that left handed people make good writers. Then and there I knew what was I supposed to write next. Yes. Left-handed people. Or rather LEFTIE, which they are fondly called. As per the survey, one tenth of this world's population is sinistral and I luckily belong to that part. But at times I question myself if I really have been that lucky... A born sinistral, my parents never had any issues with it. They happily accepted me as I was. However, people around me always have had a problem with my left instinct. While growing up, I discovered the same cousin who I have mentioned above was also a sinistral. That added to my happiness. I had someone else to share my speciality with now. We have spent quite a long period of childhood together and it was his mom who taught me to use my right hand while eating. It was quite difficult in the beginning, but I was able to respectfully ea...

Haanikaarak Parenting : A Reality Check...

Last week I went to watch Aamir Khan's much awaited and hyped DANGAL and honestly speaking, I was not disappointed. The magician that he is, he kept me hypnotized for 160 full minutes. I watched the entire film with rapt attention, cheering every time the father was successful in his endeavor and feeling sad for him whenever anything went astray his trajectory. Once I was back home, my dad asked me if I too had felt at any point of life that I too had a “ Haanikaarak MAA " and spontaneously came the reply . “ Oh Yes!! ALWAYS". 😂  Now those who know me, know well that Mum has been an extremely strict mother but quite friendly at the same time and Papu is the one who has been my knight in the shining armor all through, albeit with his own streak of discipline. Every time I saw Aamir Khan taking a strong step for his daughters, be it the golgappa treat or the hair cutting ceremony, I could not help but recall my childhood. Yes I too underwent those trials and tribulat...

My relationship with God

This article is not to hurt anyone's sentiments. I have just poured out mine. I have always been a believer in God. You see, that's how we grow up. We are made to believe in him. In some households, in a staunch way, in some, liberally. Yet, we have been made to believe in him. I for myself, was lucky to be brought up quite liberally as compared to others. I had the freedom to select my favorite God, and at times, wasn't even questioned if I wanted to visit  a church instead of temple or celebrate Eid along with Diwali. As I grew up, I started developing a questioning attitude, which in turn, changed my personality to quite an extent. Today, I find myself poles apart from what I had been, say 5 years back. My beliefs have changed, but what has remained constant is my belief in God. Yes, I do believe in the very existence of God. But I would like to disagree with things we humans relate to him. Religion, practices, idol worship, etc. I do look forward to ask help from God whe...
